Quick answer: the best Miyota 9039 watches in 2026 are the Clemence Munro (from £549, 37.5 mm, 150 m, regulated to ±12 seconds a day), the Baltic Hermétique Tourer (from €550, 37 mm, 150 m), the Beaucroft Element (£649, 39.5 mm, 200 m, regulated to ±10 seconds a day), the Praesidus Jungle Field Automatic 38 ($550, 38 mm), the Baltic Aquascaphe Classic (from €600, if you want a diver) and KOMPAS (£535, 39 mm, 100 m). All six use the same no-date Japanese automatic. KOMPAS is our own brand, so read our entry with that in mind.
The Miyota 9039 has become the default movement for independent brands making time-only automatic watches between about £400 and £700. It is slim, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, hacks, hand-winds, and has no date, which suits a clean field watch dial.
That also makes it a useful filter. If you like the 9039, the question becomes which case, dial and brand you prefer. This guide compares the field and everyday watches we think are best, with specs and prices taken from each brand's own site on 8 November 2026.

The 3.90 mm height is why so many 9039 watches come in around 10–11 mm thick. The factory accuracy range is wide; some brands regulate their movements to a tighter figure, which is worth looking for. For a deeper look, read Miyota 9039 explained.

KOMPAS
£535 · 39 mm · 100 m
KOMPAS is ours: a British-designed field watch, assembled in Hong Kong around the Miyota 9039. The dial has 12 triangular segments, one for every five minutes, inspired by the colour-coded RAF sector clocks of 1940, so it reads in five-minute steps at a glance (see how to read a 5-minute dial). The 39 mm bead-blasted steel case is 10.4 mm thick, the sapphire is anti-reflective on both sides, and the exhibition caseback shows the movement. Swiss Super-LumiNova, 100 m, two quick-release straps in the box, free tracked shipping to more than 40 countries and a 2-year warranty.
We do not regulate beyond Miyota's factory specification, and we don't claim to. 100 m is less than most of the watches here.
Best for: a 39 mm, time-only automatic with a distinctive dial. North and South are in stock.
Clemence Munro
From £549 · 37.5 mm · 150 m
The Munro is designed and assembled in Britain, and Clemence regulates each 9039 in three positions to within ±12 seconds a day, which is a meaningful improvement on the factory range. It is the most compact watch here, with a 45 mm lug length and 10 mm total height, a box sapphire crystal and deep-filled Grade A BGW9 lume. It was listed as "in stock soon" at the time of writing.
Best for: small wrists, and anyone who values regulation.
Baltic Hermétique Tourer
From €550 · 37 mm · 150 m
Paris-based Baltic gives the 9039 a mid-century look. The steel Tourer is 37 mm, 46 mm lug to lug and 10.8 mm thick, with a double-domed sapphire, Super-LumiNova C3 X1 and 150 m. It is one of the most stylish watches in this price range. Budget for import costs if you live in the UK.
Best for: vintage design fans.
Praesidus Jungle Field Automatic 38
$550 · 38 mm · 100 m
US brand Praesidus builds its Jungle Field around 1960s military styling, and the automatic 38 mm version uses the 9039 in a no-date layout. It is 46 mm lug to lug and 10.2 mm thick, with a flat sapphire and 10 ATM of water resistance. It is the closest thing here to a traditional military field watch.
Best for: a classic military look at a fair price, if you don't mind importing.
Beaucroft Element
£649 · 39.5 mm · 200 m
The Element is assembled and regulated in the UK to ±10 seconds a day, the tightest figure in this list. It is a sportier design, with 200 m of water resistance, a double-domed sapphire and BGW9 Super-LumiNova, in a 39.5 mm case that is 11.6 mm thick. At the time of writing, some colours were out of stock or on pre-order.
Best for: the best-regulated 9039 here, and extra water resistance.
Baltic Aquascaphe Classic
From €600 · 39 mm · 200 m
Not a field watch, but worth including if you want the same movement in a dive watch. The Aquascaphe Classic is 39 mm with a bezel, 47 mm lug to lug and 13 mm thick, with 200 m and Super-LumiNova C1. It is the thickest here, because of the bezel and domed crystal.
Best for: a vintage-style diver on the same movement.
Which popular brands don't use the 9039?
People often assume every microbrand automatic has a 9039 inside. Many don't:
- Christopher Ward uses the Swiss Sellita SW200-1 in its C63 Sealander Automatic, with a 38-hour power reserve and a date.
- Hamilton uses its own-branded H-50 (hand-wound) and H-10 (automatic) calibres in the Khaki Field, both with 80 hours. See KOMPAS vs Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical.
- Boldr uses the Seiko NH35 in the Venture Automatic.
- Seiko uses its own 4R36 in the 5 Sports Field (about 41 hours) and 6R35 in the Prospex Alpinist (about 70 hours).
None of these is a worse choice; they are just different. The Hamilton calibres give much longer power reserve, and Sellita is Swiss and widely serviceable.
How to choose a 9039 watch
Look at the case, not the movement
Because the movement is the same, the differences are case size, lug-to-lug, crystal, lume and water resistance. If you have a small wrist, our guide to the best field watch for small wrists helps.
Check whether it is regulated
Miyota's factory range is −10 to +30 seconds a day. Clemence and Beaucroft publish tighter figures. A published figure tells you the brand has checked each watch.
Work out the delivered price
UK brands (Clemence, Beaucroft, KOMPAS) sell in pounds with no import charges for UK buyers; more on them in the best British field watches. Baltic and Praesidus sell in euros and dollars, so add VAT and any duty.
Think about what you will use it for
For swimming, 100 m is enough. For regular sea swimming or a beach holiday, 150–200 m gives extra margin. For the difference between field, pilot and dive watches, see field vs pilot vs dive watch.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best Miyota 9039 watches?
In 2026, the strongest field and everyday 9039 watches are the Clemence Munro (from £549), Baltic Hermétique Tourer (from €550), Beaucroft Element (£649), Praesidus Jungle Field Automatic 38 ($550), Baltic Aquascaphe Classic (from €600) and KOMPAS (£535, our own brand).
Is the Miyota 9039 a good movement?
Yes. It is a Japanese automatic with 24 jewels, 28,800 vph, about 42 hours of power reserve, hacking and hand-winding, and a slim 3.90 mm height. It is widely used by independent watch brands.
Does the Miyota 9039 have a date?
No. The 9039 is a three-hand movement showing hours, minutes and seconds only, which is why it suits clean, time-only field watch dials.
How accurate is the Miyota 9039?
Miyota's official specification is −10 to +30 seconds per day. Some brands regulate it more tightly: Clemence quotes ±12 seconds a day and Beaucroft ±10 seconds a day.
How long does a Miyota 9039 run off the wrist?
About 42 hours when fully wound. If you take the watch off for a weekend, give the crown a few turns or wear it for a while before setting the time.
Does Christopher Ward use the Miyota 9039?
Not in the C63 Sealander Automatic, which uses a Swiss Sellita SW200-1 with a 38-hour power reserve.
