Quick answer: for a small wrist (roughly 14–16 cm), choose a field watch with a lug-to-lug of 47 mm or less and a thickness of about 11 mm or less. The best picks are the Seiko 5 Sports Field 36 (£290, 44.4 mm lug to lug), the Clemence Munro (from £549, 37.5 mm, 45 mm), the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 36 (£595, 46 mm) and 38 (£545, 47 mm, only 9.5 mm thick), the Baltic Hermétique Tourer (from €550, 37 mm, 46 mm) and KOMPAS (£535, 39 mm, 46.5 mm). KOMPAS is our own brand, so weigh our view accordingly.
Field watches were made to be worn, not noticed, so the category suits small wrists better than most. But "small" on a spec sheet doesn't always mean small on the wrist. A 36 mm watch with long lugs can overhang a slim wrist, while a 39 mm watch with short lugs can sit neatly.
This guide ranks nine field watches by lug-to-lug length and gives you a quick way to check what will fit. Specs and prices come from the brands' own sites or major UK retailers, checked on 8 November 2026.
Why lug-to-lug matters more than diameter
Lug-to-lug is the distance from the tip of the top lugs to the tip of the bottom lugs. It tells you how much of your wrist the watch covers from top to bottom.
The rule is simple: the lugs should stay on the flat top of your wrist. If they hang over the edges, the watch looks too big and the strap can't wrap neatly, however small the diameter. Thickness matters too: a tall watch on a slim wrist looks top-heavy and catches on cuffs.
How to measure your wrist
- Circumference. Wrap a tape, string or strip of paper around your wrist just above the wrist bone. Read it in centimetres.
- Flat-top width. Hold a ruler across the top of your wrist, where the watch sits, and measure the flat part from edge to edge before it curves away.
- Compare. The watch's lug-to-lug should be no longer than your flat-top width. If in doubt, cut a paper rectangle to the watch's lug-to-lug and diameter and lay it on your wrist.

Sizing table: wrist size vs lug-to-lug
Use this as a starting point. Wrist shape varies, so a flat wrist can carry more than a round one of the same circumference.
| Wrist circumference | In inches | Lug-to-lug that usually sits well | Diameter to look at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 14.5 cm | Under 5.7 in | 44–45 mm | 34–37 mm |
| 14.5–15.5 cm | 5.7–6.1 in | up to about 46 mm | 36–38 mm |
| 15.5–16.5 cm | 6.1–6.5 in | up to about 47 mm | 37–39 mm |
| 16.5–17.5 cm | 6.5–6.9 in | up to about 48–49 mm | 38–40 mm |
This is our rule of thumb, not a measurement standard. Your flat-top width is the number that decides it.

The picks
Smallest overall: Seiko 5 Sports Field 36
At 36.4 mm with a 44.4 mm length, this is the most compact field watch here and the cheapest at £290. The trade-offs: it is 12.5 mm thick, uses a domed Hardlex crystal rather than sapphire, and has a day-date window. The 4R36 automatic runs for about 41 hours.
Best compact automatic: Clemence Munro
37.5 mm, 45 mm lug length and just 10 mm tall, with 150 m of water resistance and a box sapphire crystal. Designed and assembled in Britain (see the best British field watches). If you have a small wrist and £550 to spend, this is very hard to beat. It was "in stock soon" at the time of writing.
Best classic: Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 36 or 38
The 36 mm version (£595) is 46 mm lug to lug and rated to 100 m, but uses an acrylic crystal. The 38 mm version (£545) has sapphire and is the slimmest watch here at 9.5 mm, but is rated to only 50 m and has the longest lug-to-lug, at 47 mm. Both are hand-wound with 80 hours of power reserve. See KOMPAS vs Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical.
Best vintage style: Baltic Hermétique Tourer
37 mm, 46 mm and 10.8 mm, with a double-domed sapphire and 150 m. Sold in euros, so check import costs.
Best traditional military look: Praesidus Jungle Field Automatic 38
38 mm, 46 mm lug to lug, 10.2 mm thick, with a flat sapphire and a no-date Miyota 9039. Sold in US dollars. Four of the watches here share that movement; see the best Miyota 9039 watches.
Best for the outdoors: Seiko Prospex Alpinist SPB155
A mountain-inspired field watch at 38 mm with a 46 mm length, 200 m of water resistance and about 70 hours of power reserve. At 12.9 mm it is the thickest here, and it has a date. £650.
Best 39 mm: KOMPAS
KOMPAS is our own, and the largest watch here at 39 mm. It earns its place because the 46.5 mm lug-to-lug is shorter than the 38 mm Hamilton's, and it is 10.4 mm thick. The dial has 12 triangular five-minute segments, inspired by the RAF sector clock of 1940, so it reads clearly without needing a bigger case (see how to read a 5-minute dial). Miyota 9039 automatic, sapphire with anti-reflective coating on both sides, 100 m, and a rubber strap and nylon strap in the box. £535 with free tracked shipping to more than 40 countries and 14-day returns, so you can try it on at home. North and South are in stock; East and West are sold out with a restock list.
On a wrist under about 15 cm, check the 46.5 mm against your flat-top width first.
Beyond the numbers
Strap length
On a small wrist, the strap matters as much as the case. Check that the strap's shortest hole fits you before ordering, or plan to swap it for a shorter one. KOMPAS uses 20 mm quick-release straps, so any standard 20 mm strap fits.
Thickness and crystals
A double-domed or box crystal adds height. If you wear shirts with tight cuffs, the slimmer watches here (Hamilton 38 at 9.5 mm, Clemence at 10 mm, Praesidus at 10.2 mm, KOMPAS at 10.4 mm) will be easier to live with.
Dial and bezel
A plain dial with no bezel, like most field watches, looks larger than a diver of the same size, because the dial reaches closer to the edge. Dark dials tend to look slightly smaller than light ones.
Movement choice
Hand-wound movements are thinner because there is no rotor, which is why the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 38 is the slimmest here. Automatics are a little taller but wind themselves. For more on the trade-off, read what is a field watch?.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best field watch for small wrists?
For most small wrists, the Clemence Munro (from £549) is the best all-rounder: 37.5 mm, 45 mm lug to lug, 10 mm tall and 150 m water resistant. On a tighter budget, the Seiko 5 Sports Field 36 (£290, 44.4 mm) is the smallest. The Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 36 and 38 and KOMPAS (46.5 mm, our own brand) also wear well.
What size watch is best for a small wrist?
Look at lug-to-lug first. For a wrist of about 14.5–16.5 cm, a lug-to-lug of 46–47 mm or less and a diameter of 36–39 mm usually fits well. The lugs should not overhang the flat top of your wrist.
Is a 39 mm watch too big for a small wrist?
Not necessarily. A 39 mm watch with a short lug-to-lug can wear smaller than a 38 mm watch with long lugs. KOMPAS is 39 mm with a 46.5 mm lug-to-lug, shorter than the 47 mm of the 38 mm Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical.
What is lug to lug on a watch?
It is the distance from the tip of the top lugs to the tip of the bottom lugs. It shows how much of your wrist the watch covers from top to bottom, and it is the most important number for fit.
Is 36 mm or 38 mm better for a small wrist?
It depends on the lugs. The Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 36 is 46 mm lug to lug; the 38 is 47 mm. The Seiko 5 Sports Field 36 is shorter still, at 44.4 mm. If your flat-top width is under about 45 mm, choose the shorter watch.
How do I measure my wrist for a field watch?
Wrap a tape, string or paper strip around your wrist just above the wrist bone for the circumference. Then measure the flat top of your wrist with a ruler and compare it with the watch's lug-to-lug.
