Watch Gift for Him Under £600: Why a Field Watch Makes Sense

A good watch gift for him under £600 is a mechanical field watch: versatile, tough and easy to wear every day. If you don't know his size, choose around 39 mm; choose an automatic so he never has to wind it; and pick a colour that matches how he lives. KOMPAS, our own watch at £535, fits that brief, and so do the other field watches we name below.

Most gifts are used for a season. A good watch is worn every day for years, and every time he checks the time he remembers who gave it to him. The hard part is choosing one he'll actually wear, without asking him and spoiling the surprise. This guide helps with exactly that.

Why a field watch is the safest watch gift

If you don't know exactly what he likes, a field watch is the lowest-risk choice there is.

  • It goes with everything. Field watches are simple and legible, so they work with a T-shirt, a jumper or a suit.
  • It suits most wrists. Field watches are traditionally 36–40 mm, a size that fits the widest range of wrists.
  • It is tough. Built to be worn outdoors, a field watch doesn't need to be babied.
  • It doesn't date. The design has barely changed in a century, which is why it still looks right.

A dress watch can feel too formal; a large dive or pilot watch can be too much for some wrists. A field watch sits comfortably in between.

How to choose his size without asking

Borrow a watch he already wears

If he owns a watch he likes, look at it when he takes it off. Search the model name online to find its diameter and lug-to-lug length. If it is between 38 and 41 mm, a 39 mm watch will feel familiar.

Measure a strap

If he has a watch on a leather strap, measure from the hole he uses to the buckle. That gives you his wrist circumference.

Use the 39 mm rule of thumb

A 39 mm watch with a 46.5 mm lug-to-lug suits most wrists from about 15 cm upwards. If you are unsure, it is one of the safest sizes you can choose. Our 39 mm wrist size guide has a full chart.

How to choose the right colour

KOMPAS comes in four directions, each named for a point of the compass. It is an easy way to match the watch to the man.

Automatic, hand-wound or quartz?

Under £600, you'll find all three.

  • Quartz is the most accurate and needs almost no attention, but lacks the character of a mechanical watch.
  • Hand-wound mechanical watches need winding every few days, a ritual some people love.
  • Automatic watches wind themselves as they are worn. For a gift, this is usually the best choice: it has the craft and character of a mechanical watch without asking anything of him.

KOMPAS uses the Japanese Miyota 9039 automatic: 24 jewels, 28,800 vph, about 42 hours of power reserve, hacking seconds and hand-winding. Like any mechanical watch it gains or loses a few seconds a day. Through the display caseback he can watch the movement work.

What makes KOMPAS a meaningful gift

A dial with a story

The KOMPAS dial carries 12 layered triangular segments, one for every five minutes, inspired by the colour-coded RAF sector clocks of Fighter Command operations rooms during the Battle of Britain in 1940. Plotters used those clocks to make sure no report on the table was more than 15 minutes old. It gives him something to talk about every time someone asks about his watch. The full story is in RAF sector clock watch: how to read a 5-minute dial and on our history page.

Built to be worn

  • 39 mm sandblasted stainless steel case, 46.5 mm lug to lug, 10.4 mm thick
  • Japanese Miyota 9039 automatic movement
  • Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides
  • Swiss Super-LumiNova®
  • 100 m water resistance, fine for swimming

British design

KOMPAS is designed in Great Britain, and is a trade member of the Alliance of British Watch & Clock Makers. In February 2026, Oracle Time included KOMPAS in its "Best British Watches of 2026 So Far", calling it "a fun, fittingly adventurous design" that "already has me wondering what the brand will do next."

What comes in the box

A gift should feel like a gift when it is opened. Every KOMPAS arrives in a triangle presentation box.

Inside are two quick-release straps, rubber and nylon. Rubber for wet days, the gym or the beach; nylon for everything else. He can change them in seconds without tools, and the 20 mm lug width means any standard 20 mm strap fits too.
